Are Avocados Good For Fatty Liver?

The facts may not be as straightforward as some may have you believe. Most would call avocadoes a superfood for the Fatty Liver. But does that mean you can eat as much avocado as you want for fatty liver? While I reversed my Fatty Liver, I consumed avocados quite regularly and always ran with the assumption that avocado can do no harm. However, some recent studies have brought forward new information that you must know about Avocados and Fatty Liver.

The good news though is, that once you understand the parameters properly, you can use avocados as your ace against the NAFLD. The key lies in the balance between the benefits provided by avocados and the number of avocados you consume.

Before we get into the quantity, let’s first discuss why are avocados so good for fatty liver and more importantly, what about them is not so good.

Why Are Avocados Good For Fatty Liver

First, studies have shown that avocados contain compounds that help reduce liver damage. Second, studies have further shown that avocados help in bettering the lipid profile and reduction of triglycerides and cholesterol. As you may already know, triglycerides are responsible for fat getting deposited into the liver, and hence the triglyceride-controlling properties of avocadoes are an ace against NAFLD.

Finally, avocadoes reduce BMI and weight which are both helpful for reversing Fatty Liver. Believe it or not, even Avocado Oil [#link Is Avocado Oil Good for fatty liver], has been shown (check this study) to improve the hepatic lipids and blood triglycerides levels.

Let me recap how avocados help with the prevention and remediation of Fatty Liver. They :

  • Reduce liver damage
  • Improve cardiovascular health
  • Control triglyceride levels
  • Manage weight and optimize BMI

I know! You may feel like running off to market and loading up on avocados. Stay with me though, you do not know everything yet.

Why Could Avocados Be Bad For Fatty Liver

Amazing Avocado!

If you do not already know this, it is important to understand that avocados are rich in monosaturated fats. While the common belief says only “saturated fat” is bad and monosaturated fly helps in improving the lipid profile, the common belief is not entirely correct. A recent study in 2017, shows that this thumb rule doesn’t necessarily give us a license to eat as much monosaturated fat as possible. The study showed that a high monosaturated fat-containing diet can still cause an increase in fat deposits in the liver. In short, too much of monosaturated fat in the diet can result in actually worsening your NAFLD.

To summarize, avocados are high in monosaturated fat. Even though they are very beneficial in the right quanitity, if you overdo it, they can harm your liver even further.

Please note, while half an avocado a day could be ok, eating 2-3 avocados per day can make your NAFLD worse. Hence, it is extremely important to understand what is a safe quantity of avocados to eat during the day.

How Many Avocados Can You Eat With Fatty Liver

The trick is moderation. If you want to eat daily, I recommend eating no more than half an avocado per day to reap the liver-protecting benefits without harming yourself since there are 21g of monosaturated fat in a whole avocado. Alternatively, you can eat 1 whole avocado no more than 2-3 days a week.

If you want to eat avocado multiple times in the day, reduce your serving size so that in total you are consuming no more than half an avocado.

Just because avacod has benefits, it is not a guilt free treat. There is a limit on the quantity you can eat and also on what else you can eat the day you eat an avocado.

Also, Given that avocado is high in fats, you should know that having avocados during the day counts toward the maximum daily fat you can consume. Basically, if you are eating avocado someday, you may as well reduce fat consumption from other sources on that day.

Conclusion

Are Avocados Safe For Fatty Liver? Only when you eat the right amount. Beyond that, the fat content of avocado is high. Avocado though has too many liver-friendly benefits to be ignored in the diet. Since I was diagnosed with fatty liver, I have been eating avocados at least once per week and I firmly believe that it has contributed to reversing my fatty liver.

Verdict: Yes, you can eat Avocado safely with fatty liver but only when you eat in the right quantity. In fact, it has too many liver-friendly benefits hence I highly recommend adding it as part of your diet.

With that, I will love to hear how you all like your avocados. Could you please share your recipes with me?
